'Eaters Come out Strong at Beach Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. -
The UC Irvine women's track & field team combined for 13 top-10 finishes at the Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State at Jack Rose Track.
 
On Friday, Villanueva claimed runner-up honors in the hammer throw with a toss of 183-08. Crenshaw added a seventh-place finish with a personal-record 169-11. Crenshaw moved up three spots to No. 6 in school history.
 
Villanueva led the Anteaters again on Saturday, coming in fifth out of 40 in the discus (153-10). Crenshaw was also 11th at 137-05.
 
In the shot put, sophomore Ariya Chestnut established a lifetime-best 41-02.50 to take sixth overall, while Crenshaw was eighth (40-02).
 
Freshman Kayla Mixon was fifth in the long jump at 17-00.75, and freshman Chaselyn Amos took 13th (16-05.25). Sophomore Sara Griffith also tied for fifth in the high jump (4-11) in her outdoor collegiate debut.
 
Sophomore Citlali Pichardo (35-01) and Mixon (34-08.5) competed in the triple jump.
 
On the track, seniors Anastasia Karnaze (11:13.93) and Mariah Theologidy (11:57.68) were second and fourth in the 3000m steeplechase, respectively.
 
Sophomore Patricia Sanchez was fifth in her first collegiate 3000m, crossing the finish line in 10:29.68.
 
Junior Kayla Rodriguez came in seventh in the 400m (63.58). Sophomore Jaida Robinson (12.75) and Amos (12.88) also placed among the top-25 in the 100m.
 
Senior Cecily Montanez led a trio of 'Eaters in the 200m, running a wind-aided personal-record 25.27 (9th). Robinson (25.85) was 18th, while Amos (26.47) rounded out the group in 25th.
 
Junior Daisy Garcia established a personal-best 5:04.03 to lead UCI in the 1500m.
 
Freshman Tess Mathes was 16th out of 44 in the 800m, clocking in at 2:18.98. Freshman Elizabeth Celada Padilla was also 21st (2:20.73).
 
Rodriguez, Mathes, Robinson and freshman Emily Ruff closed out the day on the track with a seventh-place finish in the 4x400m (4:03.89).
 
UC Irvine will be back in action next weekend at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, March 13-14.
