UCI Sets Personal Bests on First Day of NM Collegiate Classic

The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team kicked off the New Mexico Collegiate Classic with three top-10 finishes and six personal records Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
Senior Brianna Villanueva registered her third-straight top-10 showing in the weight throw as her toss of 57-02.75 was the eighth-best in a field of 43 athletes. Villanueva took fourth in the Anteaters' previous two meets, and established a lifetime-best 58-01.25, which ranks second in school history, at the season-opening UW Preview.
 
In her second collegiate weight throw competition, sophomore Tayla Crenshaw notched a personal-record 51-01.5 to come in 17th. Crenshaw is the fifth 'Eater in program history to surpass the 50-foot mark.
 
Freshman Chaselyn Amos saw an improvement of nearly two feet in the long jump with a leap of 17-00.75.
 
On the track, sophomore Zani Meaders clocked an indoor personal-best 24.98 (25.05 altitude-adjusted) in the 200m. Meaders' time moves her up two spots to No. 4 on UCI's all-time charts.
 
Senior Mychal Robinson finished 10th out of 50 in the unseeded 200m with a career-best 25.89 (25.96aa). Sophomore Jaida Robinson was also 14th at 26.08 (26.15aa) in her indoor debut.
 
Junior Sha'Maya Flanagan registered a season-best 56.99 (57.10aa) in the unseeded 400m. She was first in her section and eighth overall, while climbing up to No. 5 in school history. Senior Cecily Montanez placed 25th (60.08).
 
Freshman Tess Mathes, who already ranks fourth among UC Irvine's 600m leaders, ran a personal-record 1:37.57 for a top-20 finish.
 
Senior Anastasia Karnaze led a quartet of Anteaters in the 3000m, crossing the finish line in 11th place at 10:36.30 (10:20.63aa). Senior Mariah Theologidy was also 14th with an altitude-adjusted PR of 10:25.84.
 
UC Irvine resumes action at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic Saturday with the field events starting at 8:30 a.m. (PST) and the track events commencing at 9 a.m. (PST).
