Anteaters Can't Contain UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine was upset by No. 10 UC San Diego for the second time in a week, falling to the Tritons 3-0 (25-, 25-18, 25-23) at RIMAC Arena.

UCSD dominated the match, leading UCI in kills (52-28), hitting percentage (.357-.274), digs (31-23) and aces (4-1). The teams were deadlocked in blocks at 4.0 all.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Alexandre Nsakanda lead UCI with eight kills in two sets
>Middle blocker Scott Stadick hit .636, recording seven kills on 11 attempts with no errors
>Joel Schneidmiller had a team-high eight digs
>UCSD was led by Wyatt Harrison with 16 kills. Connor Walbrecht had 45 set assists and 12 digs  

FIRST SET
>UCI had a 7-5 lead on a Alexandre Nsakanda ace
>UCSD would score four unanswered to take a 9-7 advantage
>A 4-1 spurt increased the Tritons' lead to 16-11
>UCI tried to rally, out-scoring UCSD 3-1 to close to 24-22
>A kill by Kyle McCauley ended the set, 25-22

SECOND SET
>A 4-0 run helped UCSD jump out to a 5-2 lead
>Five more points by the Tritons broke the set open 12-4
>The Tritons maintained control the entire set and went on to win 25-18

THIRD SET
>UCI used a block by Scott Stadick and Nsakanda and a kill by Nsakanda to take a 3-1 lead
>UCSD would catch the Anteaters at 4-4
>A pair of kills gave the Tritons a 13-11 cushion
>UCI would get as close as 17-14, but UCSD would score three of the next four to maintain a 20-15 lead
>The Anteaters would score six in a row to move ahead 22-21. UCI had kills by Nsakanda, Stadick and Joel Schneidmiller in the run
>The excitement was short-lived out of a timeout the Tritons closed out the match on a 4-1 run, 25-23

NOTES
>Four blocks is a season-low for the Anteaters
>It is the second time in program history that UCSD has swept the season series (2008)

>UCI will travel to Concordia Tuesday (Feb. 25) before hosting Grand Canyon Friday (Feb. 28) at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
