
Kang Tied for Early Lead at John A. Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Kaua'i - UC Irvine men's golf had an impressive start to the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, tying for fourth in a loaded 21-team field after Thursday's opening round at Wailua Golf Course.
The Anteaters combined for a first-round total of 289, and are tied with No. 40 New Mexico. UNC Wilmington and No. 15 BYU hold a share of the early lead with each carding a 287. No. 10 Texas A&M (288) is third.
The three-day tournament features four teams ranked in Golfstat's top-15 and seven in the top-50.
Senior Jonathan Kang is one of six players atop the individual leaderboard with a 3-under 69. He is tied with Texas A&M's Josh Gilege and Sam Bennett, Peter Kuest (BYU), Tommy Kuhl (Illinois) and Segundo Oliva Pinto (UNCW).
Kang fired off a team-best six birdies against three bogeys for his third sub-70 score of the season.
Senior Ramiz Jamal is tied for 24th after shooting a 1-over 73. Jamal had a strong finish to the first round with all four of his birdies coming on his final five holes.
Senior Chris Casey is also tied for 24th. Casey made a late push, getting to even par with back-to-back birdies, but bogeyed the last hole for a first-round 73.
Senior Anthony Truong and sophomore Parker Lestz both carded a 74 (+2) to tie for 38th. Truong got off to a good start and held steady at 1-under to begin the back nine, but he was unable to maintain that momentum with four bogeys over his final eight holes.
UC Irvine continues play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Friday, Feb. 21, with a second-round shotgun start at 8 a.m. (HT)/10 a.m. (PT).
