Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over UNLV (25-21, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19) in the first match of the UCI/adidas Invitational at the Bren Events Center Friday morning.
The Anteaters (1-3) had a season-high .234 (44-14-128) hitting percentage, 10 aces and eight blocks. The Rebels (2-2) out-hit UCI .254 (55-20-138).
HEAD COACH ASHLIE HAIN SAID:
"We are a young team this year with people playing new positions. We showed some progress against UNLV. It's a win and its always good for the team to feel success."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Abby Marjama led UCI with a season-high 14 kills, 10 digs and six aces

FIRST SET
>UCI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a kill by

>A 6-1 UCI run that included three kills Marjama and was capped by an ace by Makyla Wolfe pushed the Anteaters advantage to 13-5
>UCI held a comfortable 20-12 lead then would sit at set point 24-15 only to watch the Rebels come back with six straight points to close within 24-21
>A kill by
Cassie Stewart stopped the run to end the set, 25-21
SECOND SET
>With the help of two aces by Paris Oliveira, UNLV had an early 7-2 lead
>UCI chipped away and back-to-back kills by
Kelly Negron and Ofoegbu got the Anteaters within 9-8
>Three straight kills by Shelby Capllonch followed by a block put the Rebels back in control 13-8
>The Anteaters would get no closer than three the rest of the way as UNLV took the set 25-18
THIRD SET
>UNLV started with a 7-0 run which included four Anteater errors
>UCI rallied on a 11-0 run that had five aces by Marjama to give UCI a 10-7 lead
>UNLV score four in a row to knot the set at 16-16
>A kill by
Makayla Wolfe gave UCI set point, 24-22, but the Rebels would not go away scoring the next two points on Capllonch kills, 24-24

Loryn Carter and a solo block by
Makayla Wolfe would end the set 26-24
FOURTH SET
>The teams stayed close during the fourth set until a pair of Carter kills followe by one by Marjama opened up a 20-16 lead for the Anteaters
>The set and match would end on a UNLV service error, 25-19
