Late Turmoil Spoils Home Opener

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer went toe-to-toe with No. 6 Georgetown staying level until a red card and goal in the final 12 minutes led to a 1-0 victory for the Hoyas Friday night in Anteater Stadium.

First Half Feelers
The two sides couldn't put many dents in each other's armor early on both testing the other keeper once in the first half with No. 6 Georgetown (3-0-0) taking the majority of the shots, 8-3.

Proceed With Caution
The second half began to open up as the physical play presented itself. The sides each has seven fouls called with one card between them to UC Irvine (0-2-1) junior Eder Oliva. A second yellow was issued in the 50th minute to Roberto Molina, and then the match turned on a second caution to Oliva in the 78th minute after a high kick met a Hoyas player sending Oliva off and putting the 'Eaters a man down for the final 12 minutes.

Advantage: Georgetown
Despite picking up their first yellow in the 84th minute, the Hoyas saw their opportunity to strike with the minutes winding down in regulation. Sean O'Hearn cut up the midfield following a set piece near the far sideline. He fed Jacob Montes who found daylight and lashed a shot from 25 yards out inside the far post to make it 1-0, Georgetown.

The 'Eaters fought for the equalizer holding the majority of the second half shots and possession, but could not find it falling by the 1-0 score.

Final Score: No. 6 Georgetown 1, UC Irvine 0
The Anteaters were shutout for the second time this season as they were outshot, 10-6, but picked up six corners to three for GU. The match finished with six cards, four to the 'Eaters, and the three they received in the second half matched their shot total.

Ford Parker make two saves on the night while his counterpart, Giannis Nikopolidis stopped three. Roberto Molina and GU's Derek Dodson led all players with three shots each with two of Molina's finishing on target.

UC Irvine heads back on the on the road next with Monday evening contest at #4 Stanford. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. and will be shown online via the Pac-12 Network live stream.
