IRVINE, Calif. – The 2019-20 women's tennis schedule has been set and is now up for fans to see where the team will be playing for this upcoming season.
"Coach Perez and I have created an excellent schedule full of new opportunities, but what we are looking forward to most is continuing to collaborate with the players on their games and build strong relationships," head coach
Elizabeth Ferris said. "We are coming off our most successful season of the last few years and we want to build on that excitement."
The Anteaters' fall slate consists of four tournaments - the Long Beach State Fall Invitational (Oct. 11-13), ITA West Regionals (Oct. 17-20), Jack Kramer Club Invitational (Nov. 1-3), and the SDSU Fall Classic 2 (Nov. 8-10).
On Jan. 24, the 'Eaters begin their dual match schedule with a doubleheader at Cal State Los Angeles (12 p.m.) and at Caltech (3 p.m.). The following day, they will travel to Northridge for a neutral-site match against Westmont.
"These teams are great matches to test us before some early conference matches and it's rare to have an opportunity to travel and play our entire roster," said Ferris. "As most of our roster returns this season, we will look to continue with some of our doubles pairings from last season, but there are definitely some intriguing possibilities that we will look to explore."
UC Irvine will then make its home debut on Feb. 1 when it hosts Hawaii in its Big West opener. The following weekend UCI returns to Anteater Stadium to play Nevada (Feb. 7) and Grand Canyon (Feb. 8).
The 'Eaters then make the short trek to Fullerton to play Hope International (Feb. 8) before coming back home to host Utah (Feb. 15), UC San Diego (Feb. 20), and conference foe CSUN (Feb. 22).
"One of the highlight matches of February will no doubt be Utah as we don't host Pac-12 teams very often," Ferris added.
In March, UC Irvine continues Big West play at UC Davis (March 1). Then the 'Eaters host three consecutive non-conference matches against Villanova (March 5), Louisiana Tech (March 8), and Abilene Christian (March 12).
UCI finally travels outside of California to Las Cruces, N.M., to play New Mexico State (March 24) and UTEP (March 25). Then the Anteaters make their way to the east coast for two matches in Maryland and one match in Delaware. They will play at Salisbury University (March 28), at Delaware (March 28), and at Maryland Eastern Shore (March 29).
"With the exception of Villanova, every team in March will be new competition for us," said Ferris. "It will be especially exciting to travel to New Mexico and Maryland during spring break. One of our biggest goals is to continue to make strides in the conference and to peak at the right times."
UC Irvine wraps up Big West action in April, starting with a three match home stand. The 'Eaters are set to host UC Riverside (April 4), Cal Poly (April 10), and UC Santa Barbara (April 11). The Anteaters then conclude the regular season at Long Beach State (April 16) and at Cal State Fullerton (April 18).
The Big West Tournament will be held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, April 23-26.
