IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer held firm against the Cal Golden Bears, but a long, lofty goal was all the Pac-12 squad needed to upend UCI Friday night, 1-0, in Anteater Stadium.

Top Shelf
Cal (6-0-0) held a most of the possession early, and were rewarded with a goal in the 21st minute. The Bears played the ball around the offensive third with Luca Deza feeding one out to the right wing. Emma Destin launched a high arcing shot toward the far post that was too tall for keeper Maddie Newsom and glanced off her glove on the leap and settled into the net for a 1-0 Cal lead.

On The Attack
With the match still within reach, both sides continued on the attack with the Anteaters (1-6-0) pouncing on some chances trying to break through the formidable Golden Bear side. UCI managed to pepper the net with five shots in the match, three on target, but Angelina Anderson stood up to each of them thwarting a UCI comeback.

Final Score: Cal 1, UC Irvine 0
Cal held court in terms of shots, 13-5, and corners, 8-2. The teams combined for a total of six fouls, three for each, with no cards issued. Both keepers stopped three shots as Maddie Newsom made her first appearance since the season opener in Virginia. Cal continues its streak of not allowing a goal this season

A pair of 'Eaters made notable appearances in the match. Lauren McKimmey, coming of her collegiate debut last weekend, made her first career start Friday night. Freshman Erin Covey made her collegiate debut in this match entering in the 76th minute. It was the first career match in Anteater Stadium for each as well

UCI now heads out for a neutral site match in Pullman, Washington on the campus of Washington State as part of the Cougar Classic. The 'Eaters will square off with Texas Tech for the first time starting at 10:30 a.m. and streamed live online via the Pac-12 Network
