UCI Spun for Loss in Home Opener to Cyclones

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer dropped a tough result, 1-0, to Iowa State out of the Big 12 Sunday afternoon in their home opener for 2019 in Anteater Stadium.

Decisive Blow
The action came to a head in the 69th minute as Iowa State (1-1-0) found a seam on a pass by Mira Emma out of their defensive half. She hit a streaking Kenady Adams who beared down on goal, and fired off and through keeper Glo Hinojosa for the opening goal to make it 1-0 Cyclones.

Glo-wing Review
Anteater keeper Glo Hinojosa had a marvelous performance in just her second career match and first-ever start. She wasn't tested too much through the first 45 minutes, but her first save was massive stopping another 1-v-1 opportunity by Tavin Hays along the right side of the box shutting her down and collected the rebound that was crossed to keep the match scoreless early in the second half. Even the Cyclones' goal was redirected by Hinojosa who came high off her line to challenge Adams on the 1-v-1 deflecting it before it settled in the back of the net.

Near Equalizer
UC Irvine (0-2-0) pressured down the stretch looking for the tying goal, and nearly found it in the 81st minute. Kala McDaniel set up just inside the halfway line and lobbed a feed into and through the box. Alex Jaquez was on the other end, and flicked it along and into the goal to seemingly put UCI back level, but the play was flagged offside and play would carry on.

Final Score: Iowa State 1, UC Irvine 0
UCI held a slight edge in shot in the first half, 6-5, but ISU finished with more on the match, 13-11, while both sides fired two shots on target. Dayja Schwichtenberg did well enough for the shutout stopping to shots to Hinojosa's one. Possession was nearly even throughout the contest. Aleah Kelley led all players with four shots. ISU was cautioned twice while UCI picked up one yellow card to McKenzie Madison.

Bookings
UCI falls to 2-3-0 all-time against Big 12 Conference foes. A number of 'Eaters made their debuts in Anteater Stadium for a regular season match with seven players in all including Hinojosa, Gianna Creighton, and Destinee Manzo in the starting XI
