Exhibition Finale Goes Anteaters' Way

IRVINE, Calif. --- The final exhibition tuneup for head coach Yossi Raz and the 'Eaters finished 4-1 in favor of UCI Saturday night in Anteater Stadium.

First Half Fumble
The first 45 minutes Saturday night saw the edge slide towards NAIA school Marymount California out of Rancho Palos Verdes. The 'Eaters held the 8-2 shot advantage, but the 12-man squad put up the first goal off the foot of Joshua Bynoe finishing inside the far post with a right foot. The Mariner defense held up as well taking the 1-0 lead into the half.

Back In Charge
UC Irvine quickly reversed the flow as the second stanza began knotting the game 47 seconds into the second half on a shot from Alvaro Quezada ringing off the crossbar and in to make it 1-1

UCI took the lead in the 52nd minute as Michael Orozco found Roberto Molina in the box to punch it home and make it 2-1.

Eder Oliva curled a shot from 35 yards out inside the far post adding to the lead at 3-1 in the 71st minute.

UCI's final goal was a header by Molina for a brace off a Quezada cross coming in the 74th minute.

Final Score: #25 UC Irvine 4, Marymount California 1
Quezada had a goal and assist in his 44 minutes of play, and Molina's two goals came on a game-high five shots, all turned on frame. UCI put up 24 shots, 17 on target, with Mariner keeper Ramon Garcia saving 13 of them. Carlos Contreras made the only Anteater save. UCI held possession for 61% of the match, and took 12 of the 13 corner kicks.

Season Begins
Next up are the matches that matter as UC Irvine heads out of the road for two matches next weekend to begin the 2019 regular season. Friday, August 30, No. 25 UCI travels to No. 11 Saint Mary's for a 4:00 p.m. match in Moraga, and the weekend wraps up at Cal for a 12:00 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 1
