UC Irvine Duo Earns All-Big West Honors

IRVINE, Calif. - Juniors Ramiz Jamal and Anthony Truong have been named to the All-Big West Men's Golf Team the conference office announced Wednesday. Jamal was a second-team selection, while Truong earned honorable mention recognition.
 
This is the first career postseason award for both Jamal and Truong.
 
Jamal, who saw a two-stroke improvement from last year, led the Anteaters with a 72.84 scoring average. He also tied for the team lead with a pair of top-10 finishes. The Huntington Beach native came in eighth at the Nick Watney Invitational with a career-best 5-under 211 (72-68-71), and placed ninth at the Sacramento State Invitational at 4-under 212 (71-74-67). Jamal's 67 in the final round of the latter tournament was a career low.
 
Overall, Jamal carded 10 rounds at or below par. He fired off 75 birdies and two eagles, one of which was his first collegiate hole-in-one in the second round of the Anteater Invitational at Big Canyon Country Club.
 
Truong played in every tournament in his first year at UC Irvine after transferring from Arizona State. He paced the 'Eaters at the Big West Championships where he finished fourth overall (218). Truong added a top-20 showing at the Nick Watney Invitational and carded a 54-hole season-best 3-under 210 at the Redhawk Invitational (69-70-71). In addition, he went 3-0 at the Cal Poly Match Play Championship to lead UCI to the team title.
 
Through nine stroke-play tournaments, the Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, native recorded 11 rounds at or below par with a team-best four sub-70 scores. He notched a season-low 68 in the final round of the Bill Cullum Invitational. Truong, who had three eagles and 74 birdies on the year, ranked second on the squad with a 73.04 scoring average.
