SACRAMENTO - Senior
Barbara Coward finished 39th in the women's hammer throw Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Â
The top-12 finishers automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8.
Â
Coward started the competition with a toss of 172-00. She saw a big improvement on her second attempt, which measured 181-11, but it wasn't enough in a tough field that featured seven of the top-12 hammer throwers in the nation.
Â
Coward has made history this year as the first Anteater to win the Big West individual title in the women's hammer throw. She also broke her own school record for the second time in 2019 at the Steve Scott Invitational where she established a personal-best 196-07. Coward held the No. 1 spot in the Big West all season long as her previous program record of 196-02 came at the Beach Opener on March 2.
Â
Coward will be back in action Friday at 12 p.m. as she looks to punch her ticket to nationals in the discus.
