Anteaters Finish Second at Big West Championships

Final Results
LIHUE, Hawaii - The fifth-seeded UC Irvine men's golf team finished as the runner-up, and had three individuals place among the top-10 at the 2019 Big West Championships Tuesday at Wailua Golf Course.
The Anteaters recorded a 54-hole score of 884 (288-298-298). They held a narrow lead entering the final round but were unable to hold off top-seeded Cal State Fullerton, which passed three teams to claim the conference title at 876 (301-291-284). The Titans' Matt Wilson was individual medalist as he led the field at 5-under 211 (75-68-68).
UCI finished two strokes ahead of No. 2 seed UC Davis (886) and eight ahead of No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara (892). Host Hawai'i rounded out the top five (895).
Junior Anthony Truong paced the 'Eaters in fourth place with an overall score of 218 (71-76-71). He climbed seven spots in the standings with a very consistent final round of 1-under 71, where he had two birdies and only one bogey, which came on the 17th hole.
Junior Jonathan Kang had a top-10 showing at the Big West Championships for the second-straight year as he tied for eighth with a total of 220 (68-77-75). His 68 in the first round was a career best.
Freshman Matt Gunson tied for 10th in an impressive Big West debut (221). Gunson led UCI through the first 36 holes and found himself just one stroke off the lead after carding a second-round 69, which was his second collegiate sub-70 score. He ended up dropping eight spots with a 78 in the final round, but was still the only freshman in the top-10.
Junior Ramiz Jamal had his best round of the tournament as he made the turn at even par then got to 1-under with a birdie on the 10th, before a bogey and double bogey put him at 2-over 74. Jamal tied for 22nd with a 227 (76-77-74).
Junior Chris Casey also finished 30th at 229 (75-76-78).
