No. 3 UC Irvine Upended By No. 10 BYU

Box Score PROVO, Utah – No. 3 UC Irvine was upset by No. 10 BYU 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 32-30, 25-19) in a non-conference match at Smith Fieldhouse Friday.

The Cougars out-hit (.404-.325), out-dug (35-26), out-blocked (13.5-8) and out-served (5-4) the Anteaters.

UCI goes to 13-5 overall, while BYU Improves to 9-5.

HEAD COACH DAVID KNIFFIN SAID
"Pretty big-time performances by our pin hitters tonight. I thought Parker did well managing the serve receive, especially late. This was a match of  'almost' and 'not yet" moments for us. That's difficult, but we have room to grow. These big matches and big moments, including losing are important."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Joel Schneidmiller topped the Anteaters with a match-high 23 kills and four aces
>Redshirt freshman Alexandre Nsakanda made his second career start and recorded a career-high 14 kills, while hitting a team-best .407 (14-3-27)
>Outside hitter Aaron Koubi also recorded 14 kills and a team-high seven digs
>BYU was led by Gabi Garcia Fernande with 23 kills and Davide Gardini with 21
>The Anteaters logged 20 service errors in the loss

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET

>UCI used four BYU errors, one a block by Scott Stadick and Brian Garcia to take a 14-11 lead
>The Cougars would tie the set at 15-15 only to watch UCI record a kill by Austin Wilmot and two by Alexandre Nsakanda to move back out 18-15
>UCI would take the final three points on a kill by Nsakanda, Aaron Koubi and Joel Scheidmiller, 25-20
>UCI hits .522 (15-3-23)

SECOND SET
>BYU started with a 3-1 lead behind two services aces from
>UCI would quickly tie the set at 3-3 on a pair of Cougar miscues
>BYU would go on a 3-0 run to lead 7-4 then would go on a 6-2 run to break open the set 14-8
>The Cougars would roll to a 25-17 victory

THIRD SET
>Kills by Koubi and Schneidmiller put the Anteaters in front 12-10
>BYU would then rattle off four in a row, three on UCI errors to take a 14-12 advantage
>A block by Garcia and Austin Wilmot would knot the score at 14 all
>With the teams tied at 18-18, BYU had back-to-back kills by Davide Gardini forcing an Anteater timeout, 20-18
>A kill by Schneidmiller and a BYU attack error tied the set at 22-22 then a kill by Wilmot gave UCI the advantage at 23-22
>The teams would trade points until BYU used a kill by Gardini and a block to win the set 32-30. The Anteaters had three service errors in the final seven attempts

FOURTH SET
>BYU would go on a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead and never looked back
>The Cougars would score four of five points, three on UCI errors to extend the lead to 12-7
>BYU would win the set 25-19
>The Cougars hit .600 (14-2-20), while UCI hit just .154 (10-6-26)
 
NOTES
>Schneidmiller's four aces moves him in to a tie for ninth with Jayson Jablonsky in the season record book at 40
>Freshman Brian Garcia had a career-high 48 set assists in his second career start
>BYU is 25-7 against UCI all-time in Provo
