IRVINE, Calif. -
Women's track & field got off to a good start at their own UC Irvine Spring Break Collegiate Classic Friday at Anteater Stadium.

With Barbara Coward, the two-time defending Big West Field Athlete of the Week, being scratched in the hammer throw, junior Brianna Villanueva stepped up. Villanueva placed third overall with a personal-record 178-05, which ranks fifth in program history. The Atascdero, Calif., native has set two lifetime bests in three meets this year.

Freshmen Tayla Crenshaw (149-08) and Cassidy Arias (124-07) were also ninth and 11th, respectively. Arias' toss was a season best.

On the track, the distance runners picked up three Big West qualifying marks in two events. Junior Anastasia Karnaze opened with a fifth-place finish in the steeplechase, clocking in at 11:10.17, which is well below the conference standard of 11:40.00.

Juniors Mariah Theologidy and Brenda Dorantes also crushed their PRs in the 5000m with sub-17:55 times. Theologidy made a late push to claim runner-up honors at 17:46.58, while Dorantes, who led for a good portion of the race, took third at 17:51.34.
