Kang, Jamal Highlight Day One of Anteater Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team opened the spring season by hosting the first day of the Anteater Invitational Monday at Big Canyon Country Club. The 'Eaters were in sixth place through 18 holes before play was suspended in the second round due to darkness.
UCI was one of six teams to complete the first two rounds, posting a score of 603 (304-299).
Junior Jonathan Kang sits in fourth place at 1-under 143 (70-73). Kang, who concluded the fall season with three consecutive sub-par rounds, picked up right where he left off, carding a 70 (-2) through the first 18. He tied for the team lead with five birdies on the day.
Junior Ramiz Jamal struggled in the first round at 7-over, but regrouped in the second where he shot an even-par 72. Jamal highlighted the afternoon with his first collegiate hole-in-one. He recorded the ace on the par 3, 202-yard 12th hole. Jamal is currently tied for 26th at 151 (79-72).
In his collegiate debut, freshman Parker Lestz is tied for 38th with a 36-hole score of 154 (76-78). He also had five birdies.
Junior Anthony Truong (81-76) and freshman Nathan Irwin (79-78) are tied for 47th.
Chris Casey, Matt Gunson and Ethan Han (80-83) are all competing as individuals. Casey and Gunson both shot a first-round 76 and have two holes to complete in the second round tomorrow morning.
The Anteater Invitational will resume Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 a.m. The third-round pairings and tee times will be the same as the first round.
