IRVINE, Calif. – Senior Makayla Wolfe led UC Irvine in a 3-1 loss (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 25-14) to UC Davis night at the Bren Events Center Saturday.
The middle blocker made the most of her last appearance at the Bren Center leading the squad with 13 kills, one shy of her season-high. Senior outside hitter Loryn Carter recorded six kills.
The Anteater defense was stellar, out-digging the Aggies 63-51. Senior Erin Alonso had 10 digs and senior Laura Butler added five digs. Libero Chloe Owens led the team with 18 digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Freshmen Onye Ofoegbu and Joy Umeh each added 11 kills. Ofoegbu matched Wolfe with a team-high three total blocks
>Sophomore Abby Marjama had 10 kills nine digs
> Leonie Strehl (18) and Lauren Matias (17) were the kill leaders for UC Davis
>The teams each had 6 blocks, while UCD had six aces to UCI's three.Â

FIRST SET
>A 5-1 run helped the Aggies to a 6-2 lead
>A kill by Marjama tied the set at 9-9
>A kill, ace and block by UCD gave the Aggies the 18-14 advantage
>UCI closed to 18-17 on kills by Kelly Negron and Makayla Wolfe
>UC Davis won a marathon rally to keep the two point lead, 19-17
>The Aggies held set point, 24-22 before a service error kept the Anteaters alive, but Leonie Strehl ended the game with a kill.
SECOND SET
>A kill by Joy Umeh and a smash by Onye Ofoegbu put UCI out front 11-8
>A 4-0 run by the Anteaters, which included an ace by Negron and a block by Ofoegbu and Marjama increased the lead to 19-15
>UCI would score the final three points of the set, two kills by Umeh and capped by an ace by Chloe Owens end the set 25-18
THIRD SET
>In a closely contested set that was tied at 21-21, UCD used three kills and a UCI service error to go on to the 25-22 win
FOURTH SET
>It was all Aggies to begin the set, 7-1
>UCI could not recover coming as close as 14-8 on three consecutive Aggie errors
>UC Davis scored the final five points of the match, 25-14Â
