Smolicki Advances to Consolation Championship at ITA Regionals

MALIBU, Calif. - Junior Mateusz Smolicki continued his run through the ITA Southwest Regionals singles back draw Saturday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

Smolicki won a pair of three-set matches to advance to Sunday's consolation championship. In the quarterfinals, he took down Lucas Labrunie of Hawai'i, 7-5, 6-7, 10-8. He then came back to defeat Pepperdine's Evan Shamlian, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Smolicki will square off against Ethan Prost (LMU) in Sunday's final at 10 a.m.

The Anteaters also won four of seven extra matches on Saturday. Freshman Ali Amiri toppled Juan Cartier of LMU, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Mark Peneff also defeated San Diego State's Jan Kirchhoff in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (1).

Sophomore Mike Mkrtchian bounced back from a narrow first-set loss to earn a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 10-4 win over SDSU's Alex Scemanenco. Junior Jeremy Merville also upended Nabil Abdallah (UCR), 3-6, 6-2, 10-4.
