UC Irvine Falls In Five At CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – UC Irvine battled back in the fourth set, but could not win the fifth against CSUN at The Matadome Friday.

The Matadors (7-11, 2-4) would win the match 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11 behind a strong serving performance, recording 10 aces. The Anteaters go to 4-14 on the year and 1-5 in the Big West.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>The middle blockers led the way with Makayla Wolfe putting away 11 kills and Onye Ofoegbu with 10. The duo also combine for 12 blocks, six each
>Freshman outside hitter Carrissa MacDonald made the start and had a career-high nine kills
>UCI would hit .092 (43-30-142) to CSUN's .199 (64-32-161)
>CSUN had four players with double-digit kills, led by Lexi McLeod lead all players with 13 kills and four aces

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET

>A 4-0 run by CSUN opened a 6-2 lead
>A 5-2 spurt by the Anteaters closed the gap to 8-7, but CSUN responded with the next tree and would go on to lead 13-8
>CSUN would win the set 25-17 on a block

SECOND SET
>UCI would lead 5-2 on a block by Cassie Stewart and Makayla Wolfe and a Matador error
>The lead was short lived as CSUN would knot the score at 5-5
>UCI would score four in a row on a block by Onye Ofoegbu and Carrissa MacDonald, a kill by Ofoegbu and an ace by Wolfe, 9-5
>A kill by Wolfe and two Matador errors gave UCI the 16-11 advantage
>Back-to-back Matador aces got CSUN to 20-17
>A kill by Stewart gave UCI set point 24-22
>Following a pair of Matador points, a block by Wolf and Stewart ended the set 25-22

THIRD SET
>A kill by Wolfe gave UCI a 3-2 lead, the first lead change in the match
>A 6-2 run by CSUN gave the Matadors a 9-6 lead
>Back-to-back Anteater attack errors put CSUN up 13-8
>UCI would get as close as 16-13 and ultimately lose 25-18

FOURTH SET
>Six straight points by CSUN, two on aces, put the Matadors in front 7-3
>Four straight Matador attack errors helped UCI take a 12-11 lead
>Kills by Stewart and MacDonald gave UCI a 15-14 lead
>CSUN would score four in a row and move back in front 19-17
>CSUN would lead 22-18 before a kill by Oboegbu, three Matador attack errors, one a block by Stewart, and another kill by Ofoegbu catapulted UCI in to the lead 23-22
>A kill by Ofoegbu and a Matador attack that didn't cross the net gave UCI the win 25-23

FIFTH SET
>CSUN would jump out to a 3-1 lead
>The Anteaters would score four of five and knot the score at 5-5
>Tied at 8-8, a kill and block by CSUN gave the Matadors a 10-8 advantage
>CSUN would out-score UCI 5-3 to end the match, 15-11

NOTES
>Freshman Bailey Darnell made her Anteater debut, recording five digs and an ace
>Chloe Owens had a team-high 16 digs, the ninth time she has recorded double-figure digs
>For the first time in the last five outings, UCI was out-blocked, 13-12
