UCI Drops 3-0 Decision To Long Beach State

Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. – UC Irvine had a tough offensive showing in a 3-0 loss to Long Beach State (25-22, 25-12, 25-16) at the Walter Pyramid Saturday night.

The Anteaters (4-15, 1-6) hit .045 (19-15-89) for the match, a season-low.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Freshman Carrissa MacDonald and sophomore Abby Marjama led the Anteaters in kills with six apiece
>Libero Chloe Owens had a team-high 10 digs, while middle blocker Makayla Wolfe topped the team with three blocks
>Kashauna Williams and Amanda Henderson led LBSU with 12 kills followed by Katie Kennedy with 11
 
TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET

>UCI opened with a block by Kiani Stanton and Makayla Wolfe and an ace by Kelly Negron, 2-0
>Another block by Wolfe and Onye Ofoegbu put UCI up 5-2
>Back-to-back blocks by The Beach tied the set at 6-6 and an ace gave LBSU its first lead, 7-6
>A 5-1 spurt by The Beach gave LBSU a 13-8 advantage
>Three Long Beach errors closed the gap to 13-11
>An Abby Marjama kill narrowed the deficit to 17-15, but LBSU would score three of the next four to open the lead back to 20-16
>UCI would fight off two set points before Long Beach State would take the set 25-22

SECOND SET
>Three kills and a block gave LBSU a quick 4-0 start
>A 6-2 run increased The Beach lead to 11-4
>The set was all Long Beach as they would win 25-12

THIRD SET
>LBSU would go on a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead
>UCI would catch them at 5-5 on a kill by Ofoegbu and two consecutive Beach attack errors
>Long Beach would regain control on a 7-2 run (12-7)
>Three straight kills would force a UCI timeout, 17-11
>Long Beach State would take the set 25-16
