SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer keeps their unbeaten streak going with an eventful second half tying Sacramento State, 2-2, in their house at Hornet Field.
Anteater Advantage
UCI (4-4-5, 1-0-1) was on the front foot in the first 45 minutes firing nine of the 10 shots.
Roberto Molina and
Lawrence Yamaguchi registered shots on goal, both in the final third of the half, but keeper Hector Grajeda turned each away, two of his six saves on the day. UCI also posted three corner kicks to one for Sac State (5-6-2, 0-1-1), but the score remained tied 0-0 into the half
Taking the Lead
The Anteaters continued to push the envelope with three of the first four second half shots, and finally got a breakthrough in the 62nd minute. A foul by Luis Urias put
Victor Falck at the penalty spot who converted for the 1-0 UCI lead.
Sac State started to go on the offensive looking for an equalizer, but UCI extended their lead first.
Oscar Cervantes pushed play into the 18-yard box flipping a pass across the box finding
Jose Ortiz to head it home for a 2-0 'Eater lead in the 72nd minute.
Stinging Sensation
Sac State needed two goals in the final 18 minutes and got one of them just three minutes after Ortiz's goal. Alejandro Alcantara and Titus Washington knocked a pair of crosses around finding Matt Carnefix on the end of a clean cross and home cutting the deficit to one in the 75th minute.
The Anteater defense held the one-goal lead, but allowed just the second Hornet corner kick of the match in the 88th minute where they were finally able to equalize. Oscar Govea's entry found Jaime Robles who headed the cross along to Luis Urias who atoned for his penalty foul earlier in the match heading it in to tie it 2-2 with 2:16 left in regulation.
Overtime belonged to the 'Eaters taking a majority of the possession and all four shots.
Christian Gutierrez had the best chance to send everyone home early, but was denied twice consecutively at the end of the first overtime period. UCI earned their only two cards in the second overtime period, but the chances were slim as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Final Score: UC Irvine 2, Sacramento State 2
UC Irvine owned the stat sheet with 22 shots. They put more shots on frame (8) than the Hornets did overall (7).
Victor Falck was unreal playing all 110 minutes without conceding a foul and adding his goal and an assist.
Jose Ortiz scored for the third straight game giving him 16 now for his career. Cervantes' assist is his second of the season giving him a point in three of the last four matches.

"We played well for most of the game," noted head coach
Yossi Raz, "and controlled a lot of the important actions in a road match in a difficult environment against a quality team. Credit to Sac State for turning the game around late, just another indication to the difficulty that comes with playing in the Big West."
Big West Season
The 'Eaters return home for a match Wednesday, October 16, taking on UC Davis with a 7:00 p.m. kick in the first of two matches next week. The Anteaters will trek to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday looking to stay unbeaten after going 1-0-1 with four points over their first conference week.
