'Eaters Upended in 2OT to Washington, 2-1

PORTLAND, Ore. --- UC Irvine hung with the Huskies forcing overtime late, but a Washington corner kick produced the dagger Friday evening dropping the 'Eaters, 2-1, at Merlo Field to open up the Nike Portland Invitational.

In the 105th minute, Washington (3-2-1) earned its third corner kick of the match as Pascale Dumesnil sought out Olivia van der Jagt at the goalmouth as she headed the ball home for the game-winner.

Dumesnil was instrumental in the first goal of the match putting her second touch home off an Ameera Hussen pass putting UW up initially in the 55th minute.

UC Irvine (1-3-1) wouldn't go away saving its best for the 86th minute as Claire Grouwinkel tied things up chipping a shot off a defender and it making it 1-1 as the match spilled over into overtime.

The 'Eaters nearly drew first blood coming right out of the half with a goal that was taken away by an offside call.

Maddie Newsom was stellar in net stopping a career high nine shots including four in each regulation half. The 'Eaters were outshot, 17-12, firing half of theirs on target with Husky keeper Siena Ruelas stopping five.

The road trip rolls along with UCI's final match of the Nike Portland Invitational against the host Pilots Sunday, Sep. 9 with a 1:30 p.m. start.

NOTES: Maddie Newsom became the 8th Anteater keeper all-time with over 150 career saves, now with a career total of 158...Newsom's previous career high of saves in a match was 7 which she reached twice last season (at Cal Poly, at Hawai'i)...UCI drops to 0-8-0 all-time against Washington...Jessica Miclat made her first appearance since the season opener vs. USC nursing an injury...Claire Grouwinkel's goal was the second of her career with both coming on the road
