IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's cross country team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2018 season.
"We are very excited about our schedule this year as we have made two key changes," said UCI distance coach Chris Evans. "We are opening our season at the Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Park. For the first time since 1997, the Big West Championships will be hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Carbon Canyon, and it is important for us to race there early in the season so we can understand the feel and set up of the course.
"With the same thinking, we are also traveling up to Sacramento for the Capital Cross Challenge. The NCAA West Region Championships will be held on the same course in November, so we want to preview the course in preparation for the postseason. This schedule allows our athletes to not only race the championship courses, but to also test themselves against the top teams and individuals in both the conference and region."
The Anteaters will compete in six meets, starting with the aforementioned Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea on Saturday, Sept. 1. The 'Eaters are also set to travel to the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 15, and to Sacramento for the Capital Cross Challenge on Sept. 29.
UC Irvine then returns to Southern California for its seventh-straight appearance in the Highlander Invitational at UC Riverside's Ag/Ops Course (Oct. 13). Last year, the 'Eaters claimed runner-up honors with three individuals in the top-15.
That will be Anteaters' final tune-up before heading back to Brea for the Big West Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27. At the 2017 Big West meet in Riverside, UCI took fifth as a team, while Hector Garcia earned all-conference distinction for his sixth-place performance.
UC Irvine will also make a return trip to Sacramento for the NCAA West Regional meet at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on Friday, Nov. 9.
