Anteaters Strengthened After Spring Season

| By:
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer made great strides through its spring season with the 2018 season just over the horizon.

Along with competition on the collegiate level, the 'Eaters squared off against USL club L.A. Galaxy II on their turf and battled with MLS club Toronto FC at UC Irvine who were coming off their first MLS Cup title and preparing for its venture through the CONCACAF Champions League where it finished as runners-up in the championship match that went to penalties.

Both matches were positive building blocks as the Anteaters held Los Dos to a scoreless draw at the half before taking the 1-0 lead early in the second half. The 'Eaters began the spring season matching up with TFC, and played to a scoreless draw through 45 minutes as well up against first team members Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, and Sebastian Giovinco. Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney was also impressed saying, "I thought the game had good tempo which is what you want in games like this. Credit to UCI to play three 45-minute periods with just 17 players, they made it difficult with their energy."

The energy that was present throughout as noted by Anteater head coach Yossi Raz. "We got to test ourselves against organizations at all different levels who play various styles. Many players gained valuable playing time to rehearse their craft and form playing relationships. The experiences we gained in the offseason has helped us understand our strengths and areas to improve, and will serve as a quality base to build on our 2018 season."

The 2018 competition season begins in August with training and matches. Information on the team and upcoming schedule will be announced throughout the summer.
