Three UC Irvine Teams Record Perfect APR Scores

IRVINE, Calif. - The NCAA has officially released the 2016-17 Academic Progress Rates (APR), and all of UC Irvine's athletic programs easily surpassed the minimum standard of 930, while three teams also earned Public Recognition Awards.

Each of the Anteaters' 17 sports featured in the annual report (indoor/outdoor track & field are combined) had multi-year scores above 950. Eleven of those teams were at 980 or better, seven were over 990, and three recorded perfect scores of 1,000.

UCI's programs with perfect scores were women's cross country, men's cross country and men's water polo, and all three received the Public Recognition Award for scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent multi-year APR. This is the eighth year in a row the women's cross country team has been recognized, while it marks the third consecutive award for men's cross country.

The APR creates a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The APR scores released this week reflect academic rates from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

To compete in the 2018-19 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year APR. NCAA members chose the 930 standard because that score predicts, on average, a 50 percent graduation rate for teams at that APR level. Additionally, teams must earn at least a 930 four-year APR to avoid penalties.
