David Kim Leads UC Irvine on Day Two of NCAA Regional

STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team dropped to 12th in the team race following the second round of NCAA Regional action Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
 
The 'Eaters, who rose to as high as fifth place early in the round, ended up going 5-over to finish 12th with a 36-hole score of 583 (290-293).
 
Seventh-ranked Alabama and Iowa State are tied for first at 14-under 562. Kansas (563), No. 18 Stanford (568) and TCU (569) complete the top-five.
 
Senior David Kim had the Anteaters' best round of the day, firing a 2-under 70. He had only one blemish on his scorecard, while he birdied the 2nd, 6th and 16th. Kim climbed nine spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 18th at 142 (72-70).  
 
Sophomore Jonathan Kang was also under par as he saw a five-stroke improvement with a 71 (-1). Kang, who had a team-best four birdies on the afternoon, moved up 13 spots to 52nd with a two-round total of 3-over 147 (76-71).
 
Junior Ramiz Jamal shot a 4-over 76 to fall into a tie for 34th. On Monday, Jamal carded UCI's best round of the tournament so far with a 69 (-3). He will now enter the final 18 at 1-over 145 (69-76).
 
Senior Ryan O'Connor also recorded a 76 (+4) for a 36-hole score of 150, which puts him in 65th place.
 
Senior Jonathan Young is 69th at 152 (75-77). Young started the second round strong as he was 1-under at the turn, but ran into some trouble on the back nine. He did close out the day on a high note with a birdie on the 18th.
 
Stanford's Brandon Wu leads the field at 10-under 134. He is one stroke ahead of Norman Xiong from Oregon.
 
UC Irvine returns to action tomorrow for the third and final round of NCAA Regionals. The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., May 25-30. The 'Eaters are currently 14 strokes off the cut.
