
'Eaters Tied for Seventh After First Round of NCAA Regionals

STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is tied for seventh after the first round of the NCAA Pacific Regional Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
The Anteaters closed out the afternoon with a 290 (+2), and are currently tied with Colorado. They will enter tomorrow's second round just five strokes off the cut as the top-five teams from the 54-hole regional advance to the NCAA Championships.
Iowa State holds the early lead at 10-under 278, and is followed closely by Kansas (281). Seventh-ranked Alabama (282), No. 31 TCU (283) and No. 18 Stanford (285) rounded out the low five for the day.
Junior Ramiz Jamal paced UCI as he matched his season and career-best with a 3-under 69. He is the first 'Eater to shoot a sub-70 round at an NCAA Regional tournament since Tim Cha (64) and Sean Shahi (65) in 2008. The Huntington Beach native birdied the 2nd, 7th, 11th, 16th and 18th, while bogeying only two holes. Jamal, who was at par or better for the entire day, is tied for eighth.
Senior David Kim carded an even-par 72 to tie for 27th. The first-team All-Big West selection played a very consistent round of golf, especially on the back nine where he was 1-under.
Senior Ryan O'Connor recorded a 74 (+2) to sit in a tie for 44th, while classmate Jonathan Young is tied for 52nd at 75 (+3). O'Connor and Young finished with three birdies each. Sophomore Jonathan Kang is tied for 65th with a 4-over 76.
Daniel Sutton (Kansas), Brandon Wu (Stanford) and Ryan Han (UC Davis) are all tied for first on the individual leaderboard at 5-under 67.
