UCI Closes out Action on Day 1 of Big West Championships

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's track & field team opened the Big West Championships with four points, while six individuals also advanced to the upcoming finals in their respective events Friday at Matador Track & Field Complex.
 
Junior Jon Rodriguez got the Anteaters on the board in the first scored event on the track as he took sixth in the steeplechase (9:38.39). Freshman Seth Enochs tacked on a point with an eighth-place finish in the long jump. Enochs moved up one spot into scoring position on his last attempt of the final round where he recorded a mark of 23-06.25.
 
Junior Asa Allen had the third-fastest 110m hurdle qualifying time, clocking in at 14.49 seconds. He came in second in Heat 2 to automatically advance to Saturday's final. Sophomore Alan Tantiwassadakran was also 13th with a career-best 15.16.
 
Senior Paul Resong's personal-record 47.87 earned him a spot in tomorrow's 400m final.
 
Junior Brandon Lucas was the runner-up in the 200m prelims with a time of 21.32 seconds. Allen wasn't far behind, notching a season-best 21.72, but he came up just short of joining Lucas as one of the nine qualifiers.
 
Sophomore Andres Woodruff led a trio of 'Eaters who advanced to the 400m hurdle finals. For the third meet in a row, Woodruff set a new PR in the event as he crossed the finish line in 53.84 seconds (3rd). Freshman Kyle Sandoval also placed seventh in the prelims (54.90), while sophomore CJ Hicks was ninth (56.69).
 
Although they will not move on to Saturday's finals, sophomore Evan Singletary (10.95) and senior Michael Hamill (11.05) both registered season bests in the 100m. Senior Izzak Mireles added a 10th-place showing in the 10000m (34:37.82), and freshman Kit Carter was UCI's top runner in the 800m (1:55.81).
 
Senior Jon Dickinson was 12th in the hammer (164-05) and 16th in the shot put (47-04.5).
 
UC Irvine returns to Northridge on Saturday, May 12, for the second day of the Big West Championships. Ten Anteaters will be competing in seven individual event finals, while they are also set for the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The track events will be televised live on FOX Prime Ticket starting at 2 p.m.
