‘Eaters Deliver in Clutch for 4-3 Win Over UC Riverside

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team finished its regular-season schedule on a high note as it pulled out a clutch 4-3 victory over UC Riverside in Big West action Saturday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

UCI finishes the regular season with a 9-15 overall record and 1-7 in the Big West. UCR drops to 0-8 in the conference and 5-17 on the season.

With the win, the 'Eaters secure the No. 7 seed at the Big West Tournament while the Highlanders will be the No. 8 seed.

UC Irvine women's tennis and the athletic department recognized two senior players, Vivien Dvali and Ashlynn Hall, as today marked their last time competing at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

"I'm so proud of how the team fought to get this solid win! We've had some tough losses lately but the team has showed up every day and has worked hard to improve their games and it showed today, said head coach Elizabeth Ferris. "I'm glad we were able to honor the seniors with such a gutsy and focused performance".

Despite dropping the double point, the Anteaters grabbed wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles to earn the one-point victory.

Vivien Dvali and Yulin Chen highlighted doubles play after defeating Tracy Van and Natalie Penner, 6-0. However, Flora Amiri and Arianna Tilbury dropped a tough, 6-7 (4-7) decision on court two and Stephanie Hazell and Danielle fell at the top spot, 4-6.

"I'm excited for the future of our seniors. They have both done well to put themselves into a position where they'll seamlessly transition. I want to thank them for their hard work and dedication and I'll fondly look back on all the wonderful memories that were created," remarked Ferris.

Dvali continued her impressive day grabbing a quick victory at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2, to knot the game at one. Amiri followed winning at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-0 before Tilbury earned a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Lauren Wolfe on court five to put the 'Eaters up, 3-1.

Chen clinched the match at the No. 4 position with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Chloe Pham.

UCI dropped its last two matches on courts one and six, respectively.

"We still have some work to do though! Ideally you want to peak during the tournament and that's what we'll look to do!" added Ferris.

The Anteaters will play UC Riverside in the first round of the Big West Tournament Thursday, April 26 at 9 a.m. in Indian Wells, Calif.
