DAVIS, Calif. ā The UC Irvine men's tennis team dropped its last regular season contest to Big West opponent UC Davis, 4-1, Friday afternoon at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
UCI concludes the regular season with an overall mark of 15-11 and a 2-3 record in Big West play. UC Davis improves to 7-17 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.
The Anteaters got off to a slow start and could not recover. UCI dropped the doubles point with losses at Nos. 1 and 2. On court three,
Daniel Gealer and
Luis Lopez lead, 5-4, when the match was called. The Aggies clinched the point at No. 1 as UCI's
Bruce Man-Son-Hing and
Vatsal Bajpai fell, 6-4, to Everett Maltby and Ivan Thamma.
Mason Hansen tied the match at one after defeating UCD's Chethan Swanson, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. However, the Aggies answered winning at Nos. 2, 1 and 3 to take the victory.
UCD clinched the match at No. 3 singles when David Goulak defeated
Luca Marquard, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Daniel Gealer led 6-3, 5-3 over Arjith Jayaraman on court four but the match went unfinished. Bajpai was in a three-set battle at No. 6 with Tommy Lam, 6-2, 3-6, 5-6, when the match was called.
Lopez dropped at the top spot, 7-5, 6-2.
UCI will play in the first round of the Big West Tournament Thursday, April 26 at Indian Wells, Calif. The Anteaters will either earn the No. 3 or 4 seed depending on results from this weekend.Ā
