Men's Golf Wraps up Final Tournament Before Big West Championships

TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC Irvine men's golf team closed out the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in 16th place after Sunday's final round at Karsten Golf Course.
 
The 'Eaters recorded a team total of 894 (296-298-300), finishing 22 strokes ahead of fellow conference member Hawai'i in their final tune-up before the Big West Championships.
 
Host and 25th-ranked Arizona State (830) claimed the title by one stroke over No. 27 UNLV (831). No. 3 Oklahoma (833) was third and top-ranked Oklahoma State (835) climbed two spots in the standings to fourth.
 
Senior David Kim (73-76-74), sophomore Jonathan Kang (74-75-74) and junior Ramiz Jamal (75-72-76) all finished in a tie for 58th with a three-round score of 223.
 
Kim and Kang moved up five spots as they each shot a 3-over 74 through the final 18 holes. Kim has now held at least a share of the team lead in every tournament this year. Jamal, who entered the final round in 52nd place, saw a slight drop with a 76 (+5).
 
Senior Jonathan Young also tied for 68th at 225 (74-75-76), while classmate Ryan O'Connor was 77th with a 54-hole score of 229 (76-77-76). Young had a team-best seven birdies over the two-day tournament.
 
UNLV's Shintaro Ban and Colorado's Yannik Paul tied for first as they both concluded the weekend at 11-under 202.
 
UC Irvine will now have a couple weeks to prepare for the Big West Championships, which are set to run from April 29-May 1 at Industry Hills Golf Club in the City of Industry.
