IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's tennis team earned its first Big West Conference win with a 7-0 swept of Hawai'i Wednesday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
With the win, UC improves to 14-10 overall and 1-2 in the Big West. UH falls to 2-13 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
The Anteaters came out firing, winning the doubles point with triumphs at Nos. 1, 2 and 3. The duo of
Luca Marquard and
Mason Hansen got things started, winning at No. 2, 6-4.
Daniel Gealer and
Luis Lopez clinched the point with a victory at No. 3, 6-4, and
Bruce Man-Son-Hing/
Vatsal Bajpai battled at the top spot to win, 7-6.
Hansen continued his impressive day giving the 'Eaters a 2-0 lead after winning on court five, 6-2, 6-3. Bajpai followed earning a quick victory at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1.
Sasha Krasnov clinched the match after defeating Lucas LaBrunie, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 while
Luca Marquard was right behind with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Gealer battled on court four, ultimately defeating Fabian Woehrl, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Lopez went the distance with Blaz Seric at the top spot and came out on top with a three-set victory, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
UCI returns to the court Friday, April 14 for a conference match against UC Riverside at 1:00 p.m.
