Enochs Wins Long Jump at UCI Spring Break Classic

Final Results

IRVINE, Calif. - Freshman long jumper Seth Enochs highlighted a handful of impressive performances by the host 'Eaters on the second day of the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic Saturday at Anteater Stadium.

"I think as a team, we had some great results across the board," head coach Jeff Perkins said. "As a coaching staff, we know we are just at the tip of the iceberg with much more to come down the road as the season unwinds. We are all looking forward to what is to come."

In just his second collegiate meet, Enochs set two personal records on the way to an individual victory in the long jump. He took over the lead with a lifetime-best 24-01.75 on his second attempt in Flight 2. That PR was short-lived, however, as Enochs saw an improvement in the first round of the finals where he hit 24-05.5. He ended up going over 23 feet on four of his five jumps.

Enochs' 24-05.5 is the best mark by an Anteater since 1984 and is tied for fifth in program history. The Yucca Valley, Calif., native also became the first 'Eater to surpass the 24-foot mark in 26 years.

Junior Omar Valenzuela claimed runner-up honors in the discus. He was at the top of the leaderboard with a then personal-best 166-07 after the prelims, but dropped in the standings following a handful of strong throws in the finals. Then, on his last attempt of the afternoon, Valenzuela unleashed a toss of 168-04 to jump from fifth to second.

Senior Jon Dickinson rounded out UC Irvine's field athletes in the shot put where he placed sixth with a season-best 48-09.5.

On the track, sophomore Hector Garcia, senior Ashton Garcia and sophomore Sam Ayala all bettered their top 1500m marks by close to three seconds. Hector led the way at 3:52.87 to come in fourth. Ashton was sixth at 3:55.21, while Ayala wasn't far behind in eighth (3:55.93).

Junior Asa Allen, who was making his season debut in his signature event, finished first among Division I athletes and second overall in the 110m hurdles. He clocked in at 14.48, which was just .04 seconds off the 10th-best time in program history. Allen also posted a personal-record 11.00 in the 100m.

Sophomore Andres Woodruff notched a 400m hurdle season-best 54.66 to take second in the DI standings. Freshman Ian Ward added a personal-record 55.77.

Junior Paul Resong paced a quartet of 'Eaters in the 400m where he was fourth at 48.95 seconds. Junior Brandon Lucas contributed a fifth-place showing with a season-best 49.15, while sophomores CJ Hicks (49.91) and Stefon Goudeau (49.92) were seventh and eighth, respectively.

Freshman Jhamani Long ran a 1:58.01 to come in eighth in the 800m, and senior Michael Hamill placed ninth in the 200m (22.69).

In the 4x100 relay, Goudeau, Lucas, Hamill and Allen took third (41.45). Goudeau and Lucas also teamed up with Resong and Woodruff to wrap up the meet with a second-place performance in the 4x400 relay, registering a season-best 3:15.64.

UC Irvine returns to action next weekend when it heads to the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Spring Classic, March 23-24.
