TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 7 UC Irvine Anteaters continued bracket play in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational as they faced the No. 2 Cal Golden Bears and the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils. UCI suffered a 10-6 loss in the first game before falling to ASU by a score of 9-6.
With the losses, the Anteaters fall to 4-7 on the season.
GAME ONE – No. 7 UC Irvine 6, No. 2 Cal 10
Senior
Natalie Seidemann started the scoring (5:49) for the 'Eaters as she answered Cal's early first quarter goal. Exclusions on
Allie Loomis and
Christina Reyes led to two goals by the Bears' Carla Carrega (3-1). Loomis would score with 5:22 remaining in the second to close the gap.
Late in the fourth, junior
Raegan Castillo scored to snap Cal's four goal scoring streak. Reyes added one more with nine seconds remaining to bring the final score to 10-6.
Freshman
Megan Falcon and senior
Julie Swieca added a goal apiece in UCI's loss.
In goal,
Morgan Jones made seven saves.
GAME TWO – No. 7 UC Irvine 6, No. 6 Arizona State 9
The Anteaters had a slow start to their second game of the day, third of the tournament. With less than one minute left in the first, freshman
Isabel Rack let one rip to tie the game at one all. ASU's Lena Mihailovic would answer on a power play in the first with 22 seconds remaining. Swieca had a breakaway with an assist from goalkeeper
Jenna Phreaner to tie the game once again.
Rack scored in the third with 6:52 remaining to stop a three goal ASU scoring streak. Less than two minutes later, she tallied one more, earning her first career hat trick.
Keana Eldridge scored her first goal of the tournament on a power play with 10 seconds left in the third. Swieca converted on a power play in the fourth, her second of the game and third of the day.
Morgan Jones and Phreaner shared goalkeeper duties throughout the day, each tallying 32 minutes.
Phreaner totals 64 minutes for the weekend with 16 overall saves.
Nine different players have scored for the 'Eaters over the first two days of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
UCI returns tomorrow to play No. 8 Pacific at 9 a.m. for 7
th place at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
