'Eaters Conclude East Coast Trip With Win Over Lafayette

Box Score QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team rounded out its east coast rip on a high note as it defeated Lafayette, 5-1, for its third-straight road win Saturday at the Quakertown Tennis Zone.
 
With the win, UCI improves to 5-4 on the season and completes its east coast trip with a perfect 3-0 record.
 
"Another great day of competition," remarked head coach Elizabeth Ferris. "Lafayette came ready to play and it was a battle. Nothing has been easy about this trip but we have done excellent job of coming together as a team, not making excuses, and fighting for every point."
 
The 'Eaters played straight through singles competition, clinching the match at No. 5 singles.
 
Arianna Tilbury earned the deciding point for UCI after defeating the Leopards' Meredith Block, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.
 
Stephanie Nguyen set the tone at No. 1 singles earning a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win over Lafayette's Cecelia Lesnick. Danielle Garrido had to retire due to injury on court two but Flora Amiri grabbed a 6-2, 4-6, 10-1 victory in the fourth spot to give the 'Eaters another point.
 
Yulin Chen and Gillian Parker wrapped things up for UCI with wins on courts three and six, respectively.
 
"We really wanted to win this weekend; not just for ourselves, but for our team," said Parker. "I've never felt more united as a team than this weekend. We really left our hearts out on the court."
 
UCI returns to the west coast and begins Big West play next weekend. The 'Eaters play at Long Beach State Friday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m.
