LIHU'E, Kaua'i - Senior
David Kim had a hole-in-one and finished the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at 6-under 66 to lead the UC Irvine men's golf team Friday at Wailua Golf Course.
Kim used a six-iron to score the first ace of his collegiate career on the 178-yard, par-three seventh hole.
"There was a bunker in front of the green so you couldn't see the shot going in, but you could tell it was headed right at the flag," UCI head coach
Paul Smolinski said. "David didn't know it was in until he got up to the hole. That was really a jump start for him as he went on to make three birdies to finish off his round. David going 5-under over the last four holes obviously helps the team a lot."
Overall, the Anteaters made a 13-stroke improvement from the first round to move up one spot in the standings into a tie for 12th at 583 (298-285). No. 49 UNLV remained at the top of the leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 555, while fourth-ranked Texas A&M is in second (561).
After getting off to a slow start in yesterday's first round, Kim made an impressive comeback as he fired a 6-under 66 to catapult himself up to 33rd place. He finished the day with five birdies and an eagle, which was his hole-in-one on #7. Kim, whose 66 is a season low, is now at even par 144 (78-66) in the tournament.
