Anteater Offense Sputters In 3-0 Loss At Hawaii

Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii – UC Irvine hit a season-low in a 3-0 loss to Hawaii (25-19, 27-25, 25-16) to end the regular season at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday.

The Anteaters go to 16-12 overall and 10-6 in the Big West, while the Rainbow Wahine are 17-8 overall and 13-2 in league play.

TURNING POINTS
SET 1

>Hawaii started quickly with a 7-2 lead
>A kill and ace by Makayla Wolfe was followed by kills by Abby Marjama and Idara Akpakpa that got UCI back in the set, 9-8, only to watch the Rainbow Wahine score the next three (12-8)
>The Anteaters would battle back from a 16-12 deficit on a pair of kills by Marjama and another by Wolfe to creep within 16-15
>UH went on a 5-1 spurt to gain back control, 21-16
>An Anteater attack error would end give Hawaii the 25-19 victory

>UCI trailed 17-13, but went on an 8-4 run which was capped by an Akpakpa kill and two Hawaii attack errors helping UCI to 21-20 and forcing a UH timeout
>The Rainbow Wahine would stop the momentum with back-to-back kills by Casey Castillo, 23-20
>A Hawaii ball handling error and a block by Wolfe and Carter ignited the Anteaters as they would tie the set on a DeSales kill and a Rainbow Wahine attack error, 24-24
>The teams would trade points until two UCI miscues ended the set 27-25

>The teams were evenly matched early until a kill by Marjama and an ace by Wolfe gave the Anteaters an 8-6 cushion
>Five unanswered by Hawaii would move the Rainbow Wahine back in front 11-8
>Another four straight widened the gap to 15-9
>Hawaii would take the set 25-16
