Playing With Purpose; Anteaters Sweep Titans On Think Pink Match

Box Score  IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine defeated Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) at the Bren Events Center on the annual Think Pink match for breast cancer awareness.

The Anteaters swept their second consecutive opponent and improves to 11-7 on the year and 5-1 in Big West action. The Titans fall to to 6-13 overall and 0-6 in league play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>As a team, UCI hit .340 (44-9-103), the second best offensive performance of the year
>Abby Marjama had 12 kills and 10 digs, her third double-double of the season
>Outside hitter Loryn Carter had 11 kills, hitting .474 (11-2-19)
>Middle blocker Idara Akpakpa did not committ an error with nine kills on 13 attempts, hitting .692
>Felicia Marshall was the lone Titan in double-figure kills with 11

HEAD COACH ASHLIE HAIN SAID
"I like the way we started the match and were able to utilize some people off the bench. We are still working on maintaining a consistent level of play over the course of the match."

TURNING POINTS
SET 1

>A kill by Loryn Carter, an ace by Ali Koumelis and a kill by Idara Akpakpa got the set started 3-0 for the Anteaters
>A 3-0 run which included a pair of kills by Akpakpa gave UCI the 11-7 advantage then another Akpakpa kill started a 4-0 spurt to extend the gap to 17-9
>UCI would out-score CSF 7-2 to end the set, 25-14
>The Anteaters hit .520, the third best hitting percentage in a set this season

SET 2
>Cal State Fullerton controlled the set early 6-2 and continued to lead 17-12
>The Anteaters would continue to grind and inch within 19-17 on a Carter kill
>Following a Titan block, UC would close out the set, scoring the final eight points which included four Fullerton errors and was capped by a Koumelis ace, 25-20

SET 3
>A kill by Nicole Luszczak put UCI up 18-10 and forced a Titan timeout
>With UCI leading 21-14, Cal State Fullerton made a move, scoring the next four, two on kills by Summer Kerins and two on aces by Haley Carmo to narrow the score to 21-18 until a service error stopped the momentum
>Two Titan errors ended the set 25-20

>UCI celebrated Think Pink Week with a special honorary first serve by breast cancer survivors Lori Luszczak and Jessica Stewart
>UCI ties its longest winning streak of the year with four straight
>The Anteaters have topped the Titans in 11 straight meetings
>Nicole Luszczak recorded a season-best two kills
>Setter Ali Koumelis had a team-best two aces to go with 28 set assists
