'Eaters Tied for Sixth at Waves Challenge

SOMIS, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's golf team was tied for sixth when the second round of the Waves Challenge was suspended due to darkness Monday at Saticoy Country Club. The Anteaters had made it through 14 holes before play was stopped.
UCI recorded a first-round score of 320 (6th). They were three strokes behind Cal Poly and Grand Canyon, while host Pepperdine held the early lead at 297.
Senior David Kim paced the 'Eaters, carding a 79 (+7) in the opening round to tie for 20th. Senior Ryan O'Connor and sophomore Jonathan Kang were also tied for 25th with an 8-over 80. Junior Ramiz Jamal wasn't far behind in 35th, shooting an 81 (+9), and senior Jonathan Young rounded out the Anteater contingent in 55th place (84).
Pepperdine's Sahith Theegala was the individual leader after the first 18 holes at 2-under 70.
The second round started off well for UC Irvine before play was suspended. Kim was at 1-over 59 through 14 holes to move into a tie for eighth on the individual leaderboard. O'Connor and Kang each increased their birdie total to a team-best five on the day, while Young jumped eight spots in the standings.
Second-round play will resume Tuesday at 8 a.m., followed immediately by the third round.
