IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine senior Antoine Lena scored the game-winner with 39 seconds left in regulation as the seventh-ranked Anteaters upset No. 1 UCLA, 9-8 in front of a capacity crowd at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Anteaters beat the Bruins for the first time since 2007, snapping a streak of 17 consecutive losses. The Anteaters are 9-4 overall, dealing UCLA its first loss of the season (12-1).

"We have been building this unit for almost two years to get this result and the opportunity to play and beat the top teams. It helps feed our confidence as we move towards our conference season," head coach Marc Hunt said. "Today we had great leadership from Milos and Trush and great individual performances by Schuetze, Lena and Matijevic."

Freshman Fynn Schuteze led UCI with four goals followed by senior Antoine Lena with three goals and two steals. Seniors Lovre Milos and Robby Stiefel also added a goal in the win. Goalkeeper Matej Matijevic recorded 13 saves.

UCLA was led by Chasen Travisano with a pair of goals. Goalkeeper Alex Wolfe had 12 saves.

UCI's Fynn Schuetze started the scoring with a goal at 3:16 of the first period. Following a Bruins score at 2:53, Schuetze had another goal on a man advantage with 33 seconds left to give UCI the 2-1 lead.

To start the second period, Chasen Travisano knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal for UCLA at 7:32 then Schuetze quickly answered recording a hat trick with another goal on the right side at 7:17. UCLA would score the next two goals to take their first lead of the game before a Lovre Milos goal with 20 seconds remaining deadlocked it once again at 4-4. Not to be out-done, Travisano gave UCLA the 5-4 halftime lead with a goal with three ticks left.

Robby Stiefel (6:28) and Antoine Lena (3:39) added goals for UCI as they shut down the Bruins in the third period and went in front 6-5.

The teams would trade goals in the final period with the last going to Lena who caught the ball and fired in the near side of the cage for the winner.

UCI will open Golden Coast Conference action, entertaining San Jose State next Friday (Oct. 6) at the Anteater Aquatic Center.
