IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer ran the show for the first 45 minutes, but San Francisco began to unravel the lead eventually taking the match, 2-1, Sunday evening in Anteater Stadium.
UC Irvine (5-3-2) had total control of the first half with a 12-4 shot advantage and the lead thanks to
Ivan Canales. His athleticism won a ball near the left corner, and he drove on net slipping a shot around the USF keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
The 'Eaters had multiple chances to add including a pair of shots inches over the bar, four shots saved by Don keeper, Ruben Stuiver, and
Giovanni Godoy ringing the post which kept the match at 1-0 UCI through halftime.
San Francisco (3-7-0) would take advantage of its position equalizing early in the second half. The USF offense built into the attacking third eventually finding Aaron Lombardi on a 1v1, and he would finish after chipping over
Alex Waldron tying things at 1-1 in the 51st minute.
The Dons rode the momentum in the 58th minute with some beautiful touch-and-go through the midfield before Jorge Ruiz fed a ball from the touchline to Leon Schwarzer who flicked to Sean Bowman to punch home a ball inside the left post and take the lead from UCI, 2-1, just like that.
Neither team would get another good look at goals as the shots on target dried up, and UCI ran out of time falling 2-1 for its first defeat at home on the year.
Waldron finished with a pair of saves while his counterpart stopped four for USF. Canales' goal went unassisted, but tied him for the team lead with four on the season now and upped his career total to 11.
UC Irvine had 1,064 fans in attendance, the 15th crowd over 1,000 in program history and first since 2013's NCAA Tournament win vs. North Carolina. The 'Eaters conclude non-conference play with a 5-3-1 as they will travel up to UC Davis (Thursday, Sept. 28 - 4:00 p.m.) and Sacramento State (Saturday, Sept. 30 - 4:00 p.m.) to begin Big West play next week.
