No. 13 UC Irvine Drop Overtime Heartbreaker To No. 6 UCSB

La Jolla, Calif. – UC Irvine senior Ryan Warde scored with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game in to overtime, but UC Santa Barbara was able to come away with the 14-12 victory at the Triton Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Triton Pool.

The 13th ranked Anteaters even their record to 1-1, while the sixth-ranked Gauchos are 2-0.

Senior Lovre Milos led the Anteaters with game-high four goals. Warde and fellow senior Antoine Lena each added two goals, as did freshman Fynn Schuetze. Sophomores Bryant Joudrie and Jon Polos each chipped in a goal.

Goalkeeper Matej Matijevic posted 18 saves.  

UCSB started the game scoring first with Lovre Milos tied it up at 5:51. The Gauchos would add the next two goals before Bryant Joudrie cut the lead to 3-2 at 1:50. UCSB snuck a goal in with six seconds remaining to end the period with a 4-2 lead.

Freshman Fynn Schuetze scored at 7:22 (4-3), but the Gauchos responded with the next three goals to open a 7-3 cushion. Another Milos goal at 1:00 preceded another late goal by UCSB with 13 seconds left, 8-4.

In the third period, Antoine Lena and Schuetze put goals on the board at 7:46 and 6:33 respectively to close to 8-6. Jon Polo added a goal in between a pair of Gaucho goals to make it 10-7 heading in to the final period.

The Anteaters made their move with four goals in the fourth quarter, the last by Ryan Warde with 10 seconds remaining to knot the score at 11-11 all, sending the game in to overtime.

UCSB scored the lone goal of the first overtime and created some distance with two goals by Boris Jovanovic to start the second overtime, 14-11. Milos would put away the final goal of the game at 1:36.

UCI will face No. 9 UC Davis at 8:00 a.m. then No. 12 host UC San Diego at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.
