Second Half Surge Results in 3-0 Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer turned up the heat after a scoreless first half with three second-half strikes to defeat Lipscomb, 3-0, Monday night in Anteater Stadium.

The teams felt each other out in the first half finding some cracks in the defense, but unable to capitalize as none of the seven shots between them fell on target in the scoreless frame.

The match drove on past halftime with more chances, but no viable threats before UCI (4-2-1) finally broke through in the 64th minute. Luis Leon lifted the ball across the box to Daniel Crisostomo who moved it along to Giovanni Godoy, and his volley took at slight deflection inside the near post to break the tie and make it 1-0, Anteaters.

The momentum carried into the 79th minute as the Anteaters built through Jose Ortiz and Crisostomo to Mario Ortiz who charged through the attacking third into the box unmarked and buried a shot inside the far post growing the lead to 2-0.

The final dagger came in the 84th minute as Christian Carrillo was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick that he himself would convert on for the third and final goal for UCI.

The final six and change were filled with shots from each side along with a double yellow to Lipscomb (4-3-0) defender Joe Kerridge who was sent off in the 87th minute as UC Irvine would see the victory out, 3-0.

Goals for Ortiz and Carrillo were the second of the season for each while Godoy logged his third of the year, second for a game-winner. Daniel Crisostomo had a two-assist night as he now leads the team with four on the year. Luis Leon and Jose Ortiz each had an assist off the bench.

Alex Waldron ran his record to 3-1-1 on the season earning his second clean sheet in the last three matches. He saved four shots in the process to tie a season-high while his counterpart, Chris Zappia, stopped three of his own.

Anteater assistant coach Matt O'Sullivan stood in for Yossi Raz who was serving his red card suspension from the New Mexico match, and earned the victory. The Anteaters will be back on the pitch with coach Raz later this week as they continue on with two more matches in the week with the next stop at Loyola Marymount, Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m., before returning to Anteater Stadium for a 4:30 p.m. match against San Francisco.
