'Eaters Sweep San Francisco for Best Start in Program History

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's volleyball team secured the best start in program history after defeating San Francisco, 25-13, 25-17, 25-22, in the UCI/LBSU Invitational Friday evening at the Bren Events Center.

With their second win of the day, and fifth in a row, the Anteaters moved to 11-1 on the year. Seven of their victories have come by way of a sweep.

It was a total team effort with 14 'Eaters getting playing time. Junior Idara Akpakpa led the way with 10 kills on 13 swings. She finished the night hitting .615. Junior Harlee Kekauoha added 10 kills, while sophomore Makayla Wolfe had nine (.533). Junior Haley DeSales chipped in seven kills, seven digs and two aces.

Senior Luna Tsujimoto registered a match-high 14 digs, and junior Ali Koumelis also reached double figures with 10 digs.

UCI hit .283 as a team, and owned a lopsided advantage over the Dons in kills (46-25), digs (50-32) and aces (8-1).

San Francisco (3-9) scored the first two points of the night, but UC Irvine answered with a 10-3 run to go up by five. The 'Eaters continued to roll, using another 10-4 spurt, capped by a kill from sophomore Merin Kolte, to take a commanding 23-12 lead. The Dons would side out one more time before back-to-back kills by Wolfe and DeSales gave the Anteaters the 25-13 win.

UCI kept the momentum in the second set, going on top 8-3 on a DeSales kill. After calling a timeout, USF came back within two, but the home team responded by scoring six of the next seven points for a 14-7 lead. Akpakpa and Kekauoha combined for four kills at the end of the rally. UC Irvine cruised the rest of the way, going up by as many as 10 in the 25-17 victory.

The 'Eaters took the early lead in the third frame and were up by two before an 8-3 run, which ended with a Bria Beale kill and a Kylie Green ace, broke it open at 21-14. UCI stayed out front and took match point at 24-17. The Dons made it interesting, scoring five unanswered, but it was too little, too late, as a kill from Kekauoha gave the Anteaters the 25-22 win.

UCI held San Francisco to a .161 hitting percentage. Erica Ronda paced USF with 10 kills and six digs.

UC Irvine wraps up the UCI/LBSU Invitational against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Sept. 16. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
