SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer played a very similar game to their last win as a corner kick strike and stout defense spelled another 1-0 victory Friday night over USD at Torero Field.
Reema Bzeih punted another corner kick that once again found
Grayson Galbraith's head as she turned home the match's opening strike in the 16th minute giving UCI (4-1-3) the 1-0 lead.
The Anteaters could have added to their lead in the 28th minute after drawing a foul in the box and a penalty kick opportunity. USD (1-6-0) keeper Amber Michel turned away
Kiana Palacios' attempt keeping the match at a one-score game.
The Toreros found their offensive rhythm to start the second half after UCI opened up an 11-1 shot advantage, USD was unable to turn any shots on frame however as Bzeih and her fellow backline-mates produced their sixth shutout of the season finishing off another victory, 1-0.
Galbraith's goal gives her back-to-back game-winners, both coming off laser corner kicks from Reema Bzeih who boosted her conference-leading assists total to five.
Maddie Newsom earns her sixth shutout of the season despite not facing any shots. The backline of Bzeih,
Andrea Mensen,
Aleah Kelley, and
Jonnae Joseph limited the Toreros to just two shots total. Torero keeper Michel stopped five shots of her own including a PK.
UCI's unbeaten streak increased to seven matches with just one goal allowed during that stretch. The streak will really be tested as the 'Eaters return home Sunday, Sept. 17 for a 2 p.m. match against Pepperdine at Anteater Stadium.
