UCI Defense Continues Roll in Scoreless Draw

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine continued its homestand with a late Friday afternoon match in Anteater Stadium that saw loads of defense as the Anteaters and Penn Quakers drew, 0-0.

UCI (1-1-2) got out of the block quickly with a Shelby Lee shot on goal in the fourth minute, but the sides didn't threaten all that much in the half with UCI posting five of the six shots and two on frame.

The 'Eaters kept the pressure on led by Kiana Palacios with three shots early on with each whizzing just wide. Aleah Kelley and Jonnae Joseph each turned a shot on target, and Penn (0-2-1) had a late surge, but the match was destined for overtime.

Maddie Newsom was finally thrust into action in the beginning of overtime making a huge save on the right wing stopping a 1v1 chance, but the match went on into double overtime.

UC Irvine really had its best chances in the final 10 minutes highlighted by consecutive header saves on Kelley and Palacios shots in the 105th minute. Noel Baham added her second shot on goal of the match for good measure in the 108th minute, but it was to no avail as the final stood at 0-0.

The defenses stole the show standing up to their opponents. The Anteater backline allowed a total of four shots and two on target that Newsom stopped as it extended its shutout streak to 330 minutes. Penn's Kitty Qu knocked down eight saves for the Quakers who picked up their first result of the 2017 season.

UCI remains unbeaten in three straight matches now, and it has one final match this week coming on Sunday, September 3 kicking off a doubleheader with the men's side at 4:00 p.m. against Toledo.
