BERKELEY, Calif. -- UC Irvine fired 10 aces on the way to a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-13, 25-15) of Seattle U at the Cal Molten Classic.
Junior Harlee Kekauoha led UCI (2-0) with 11 kills and four service aces, while Brianna Montgomery, Haley DeSales and Makayla Wolfe followed with seven kills each. Setter Ali Koumelis totaled 31 set assists and an ace and libero Luna Tsujimoto had a match-high 11 digs and two aces. Redshirt freshman Danika Ferguson had two blocks on the final two points of the match.
Seattle, who out-blocked UCI 9-5, was led by Katarina Marinkovic with eight kills. The Redhawks hits .063 (24-19-71) for the match.
It was a slow start to the match as the Anteaters fell behind 4-0, but that was short lived as UCI went on a 9-3 run to take a 9-7 lead on a Makayla Wolfe kill. A pair of kills by Seattle U moved them back in front 21-19 forcing an Anteater timeout. With the score tied at 24-24, UCI finished out the set with an ace by Brianna Montgomery and kill by Makayla Wolfe, 26-24. Harlee Kekauoha hit .636 (7-0-11) during the set.
Kills by Idara Akpakpa and Kekauoha plus an ace by Haley DeSales moved UCI out to a 6-3 lead in the second set. Another three point run, which included a block by Kekauoha and Wolfe extended the advantage to 9-4. UCI broke open the set with a 5-0 run that had three straight Redhawk errors, 18-9. UCI would win 25-13.
Service aces were the star of the third set as Luna Tsujimoto fired two and Kekauoha had three straight to give the Anteaters a 14-6 lead. Ali Koumelis also added an ace as UCI won the set 25- and the match 3-0.
In a quick turnaround, UCI will be back in action at 5:00 p.m. versus Loyola-Chicago to close out the tournament. Â
