IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine's Tyra Jones (San Marcos, Calif.) and Paul Resong (Garden Grove, Calif.) have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the 2016-17 season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Friday afternoon.
Β
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, an individual must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Β
Jones competed in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2017 NCAA West Prelims in Austin, Texas. The rising senior qualified for the regional meet at the Big West Championships where she ran a personal-record 13.38, which stands as the second-fastest time in school history. On the year, Jones had five top-10 finishes in the 100H and placed no lower than sixth in seven 400H races. She registered a career-best 61.39 to take third in the 400H at the Steve Scott Invitational. Jones is majoring in anthropology.
Β
Resong advanced to the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Round in the 4x400 relay. He teamed up with Lloyd Sicard, Brandon Howard and Isaiah Jewett to win the event at the Big West Championships in a season-best and West Regional-qualifying time of 3:09.19. It was the Anteaters' first conference title in the 4x400 since 2012. The quartet was impressive all year long, finishing among the top-three in four of their regular-season meets with three of those being first-place performances. Resong also scored in the 400m at the Big West Championships and ran a lifetime-best 48.55 at the Mondo Team Challenge. He is an upcoming junior and is majoring in biological sciences.
Β
Both Jones and Resong were also named to the 2017 Big West Spring All-Academic Team in June.
