Jewett Collects Fourth Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week Honor
May 02, 2017 | Men's Track & Field
IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Jewett has been named the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Jewett was recognized once again as he continued his dominance in the 800-meter last weekend at the Steve Scott Invitational. He cruised to an individual victory in a loaded field that featured a pair of former Big West champions, including UCI school-record holder and 2016 Olympian Charles Jock, who finished second. Jewett registered a career-best 1:48.22, beating Jock by 1.76 seconds.
The Inglewood, Calif., native kept his perfect 800m record intact, winning all four of his races this year. His personal-record 1:48.22 ranks first in the Big West, 11th in the West Region and 31st in the NCAA. In addition, Jewett is third in program history behind only Jock and another former Olympian, Steve Scott.
Jewett also came back later in the day to close out the meet by running the anchor leg on the Anteaters' first-place 4x400 relay. UC Irvine had been going back-and-forth with Grand Canyon until Jewett pulled ahead for good on the final lap, where he ran a 46.0 split. The 'Eaters clocked in with a season-best and Big West-leading 3:10.79.
Jewett has claimed four of UCI's five Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week awards this year. Senior Lloyd Sicard was also honored on March 28.
The Big West Championships are up next for the Anteaters with the heptathlon/decathlon scheduled for this weekend (May 5-6) and the main events set to take place, May 12-13, in Fullerton.
