• UC Irvine claimed five Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week awards this year.
• Isaiah Jewett was a four-time winner, while Lloyd Sicard was also recognized for the sixth time in his career.
• Jewett is the conference leader in the 400m (46.82) and 800m (1:48.22), and Sicard ranks first in the 110H (13.74).
• The duo also made up half of the Anteaters' quartet that ran the fastest 4x400 relay in the Big West at 3:10.79.
ALL WE DO IS WIN: The 'Eaters combined for 17 event wins (including relays) during the regular season. Isaiah Jewett led the way with six individual victories as he enters the conference meet unbeaten in four 800m and two 400m races. Lloyd Sicard also finished ahead of the pack in the 110H four times. In addition, Sicard was a part of all seven first-place relay teams, with Jewett joining him in four 4x400 triumphs.
FOUR CHEERS FOR JEWETT: Sophomore Isaiah Jewett picked up his fourth Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week award after winning the 800m in a personal-record 1:48.22 at the Steve Scott Invitational on April 29. The Inglewood, Calif., native finished first in a field of 59 competitors that featured a pair of former Big West champions, including UCI school-record holder and 2016 Olympian Charles Jock. Jewett was dominant in the race, beating Jock, the runner-up, by nearly two seconds. Jewett was also recognized on April 18, and earned back-to-back honors on March 14 and 21. He remains unbeaten in both the 800m and 400m this year, while sitting at the top of the Big West leaderboard in both events. Jewett ran a 400m lifetime-best 46.82 at the Mondo Team Challenge (April 1).
LEAVING A LEGACY: Senior Lloyd Sicard continues to add on to his impressive resume in his final collegiate campaign. He earned his sixth career Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week honor after coming away with victories in the 110H and 4x400 relay at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Invitational. Sicard also set a then wind-legal season best in the 110H at the Mondo Team Challenge (13.87), before topping that performance at the Big West Challenge where he clocked in with a meet-record 13.74. In his most recent outing, Sicard was the top collegiate finisher at the Steve Scott Invitational where he notched a wind-aided personal-record 13.55. That mark ranks first in the Big West, third in the West Region and eighth in the NCAA this season. The Gardena, Calif., native is the reigning co-Big West Track Athlete of the Year and two-time defending conference champion in the 110H where he owns the school record at 13.60. He advanced to the NCAA Championships as a sophomore and junior, while qualifying for the NCAA West Prelims all three years. Sicard also competed among the nation's best this past summer as he was one of 32 athletes to earn a spot in the 110H at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
AMONG THE ELITE: Isaiah Jewett ranks third in school history in the 800m where he sits behind only Olympians Charles Jock and Steve Scott on the all-time list. Jewett's lifetime-best 1:48.22 actually came at the Steve Scott Invitational (April 29), where he beat out Jock by nearly two seconds for the individual title. Jock, who was running his first race of the 2017 season, is UCI's school-record holder at 1:44.75 as he broke Steve Scott's 33-year old record (1:47.6) as a junior at the 2012 Big West Championships.
AROUND THE HORN: Senior Brandon Howard was the 400H champion at the Steve Scott Invitational where he ran a personal-record 51.61 … He currently leads the Big West and ranks fifth in program history … Senior Matt Seawright established a lifetime best in the hammer throw at the Big West Challenge (204-04) and then again at the Beach Invitational (205-06) … Seawright ranks third among UCI's all-time leaders … Junior Jon Dickinson is also 10th with a personal-best 169-09 at the Big West Challenge … The 'Eaters have a young team with 65 percent of their roster being comprised of underclassmen (10 freshmen, seven sophomores).
UP NEXT: The 'Eaters continue postseason action at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Austin, Texas, May 25-27. The top-12 finishers in each event then advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.
